Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye), officially the Republic of Turkiye (Türkiye Cumhuriyeti (help·info)), is a Eurasian country that stretches across the Anatolian peninsula in southwestern Asia and the Balkan region of southeastern Europe. Turkey borders eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest, Greece to the west, Georgia to the northeast, Armenia, Iran and the Nakhichevan exclave of Azerbaijan to the east, and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. In addition, it borders the Black Sea to the north, the Aegean Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Turkey also contains the Sea of Marmara that is used by geographers to mark the border between Europe and Asia, thus making the country transcontinental.

The region comprising modern Turkey has seen the birth of major civilisations including the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Owing to its strategic location at the intersect of two continents, Turkey's culture is a unique blend of Eastern and Western tradition, often described as a bridge between the two civilisations.

Bodrum (from Petronium; formerly Halicarnassus (Turkish: Halikarnas, Ancient Greek: Αλικαρνασσός)) is a Turkish port town in Muğla Province, in the southwestern Aegean Region of the country. It is located on the southern coast of Bodrum Peninsula, at a point that checks the entry into the Gulf of Gökova, and it faces the Greek island of Kos. Today, it is an international center of tourism and yachting. The city was called Halicarnassus of Caria in ancient times. The Mausoleum of Mausolus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was here.

Bodrum Castle, built by the Crusaders in the 15th century, overlooks the harbor and the International Marina. The castle grounds includes a Museum of Underwater Archeology and hosts several cultural festivals throughout the year.

The region includes the municipalities of Bodrum, Turgutreis, Ortakent, Türkbükü, Yalıkavak and Gümüşlük, and numerous recent tourist-oriented developments were built or are being built across the district area. The peninsula extends across an exceptionally dry belt contrasting even with its immediately neighboring regions, and poor rainfall results in a constant shortage of potable water, an issue that became more critical lately, with newcoming settlers and the visitors.

- 17 October 2007: The Parliament of Turkey has voted to authorize strategic operations against the PKK in northern Iraq for a one year timeframe. Cemil Çiçek, Deputy Prime Minister, expressed the government's frustration with Iraq and the West, noting that not a single PKK member had been extradited to Turkey. The reaction by President Bush was to note that Turkey was informed that "we don't think it is in their interest to send troops into Iraq".(Turkish Daily News Online)
- 17 October 2007: The High Electoral Board (YSK) of Turkey said today that the Turkish referendum dealing with constitutional reforms will go ahead as planned on Sunday, 21 October. The President of the YSK, Muammer Aydın, stated that they had "decided by a majority of voted to hold the referendum".(Turkish Daily News Online)

Selected biography

Ali Adnan Ertekin Menderes (1899 - September 17, 1961) was a Turkish statesman and prime minister between 1950–1960. He founded the Democratic Party (DP) in 1946, the third legal opposition party of Turkey. He was hanged following the 1960 coup d'état, along with two other cabinet members, Fatin Rüştü Zorlu and Hasan Polatkan.

On September 17, 1990, he was posthumously pardoned and his grave was moved to a mausoleum in İstanbul. Fatin Rüştü Zorlu and Hasan Polatkan, the two other members of his cabinet who were hanged, were similarly pardoned. Adnan Menderes University in Aydın and Adnan Menderes Airport in İzmir are named after him. Two high schools, Istanbul Bahcelievler Adnan Menderes Anadolu Lisesi and Aydın Adnan Menderes Anadolu Lisesi, also adopted his name.

Uludağ, the ancient Mysian Olympus, is a mountain in Bursa Province, Turkey, of altitude 2,543 m. It is a favourite center of winter sports, including skiing, and a national park of rich flora and fauna. Summer activities, such as trekking and camping, also are popular.

The highest area in western Anatolia, Uludağ is easily ascended by car or cable-car. The park is about 22 km south of Bursa and is signposted from there. Bursa can be reached by road from Istanbul. The cable-car ascends from Bursa and has an intermediate stop in the alpine meadows of Kadiyayla at about 1000 m elevation. It ends at Sarialan at about 1630 m.

Habitats of the park range from maquis on the lower slopes, through deciduous woodland and beech and fir forest to alpine meadows at the highest levels. It is a refuge for mountain birds, such as Lammergeier and other vultures, Golden Eagle and more than 20 other raptor species. Other high-altitude species include Alpine Accentor, rock thrushes and choughs. The area is also good for eastern specialities such as Isabelline Wheatear, and, at almost the most westerly points of their range, Red-fronted Serin and Krüper's Nuthatch. The dense fir forest holds Short-toed Treecreeper, Common Crossbill and Tengmalm's Owl, a rare and very local bird in Turkey, as well as the White-backed Woodpecker.
