The Toronto City Hall is one of the most distinctive landmarks of the city. Designed by Viljo Revell and engineered by Hannskarl Bandel, the building opened in 1965; its modernist architecture still impresses today. It was built to replace the Old City Hall (built in 1899). edit

Oscar Peterson, a Canadian jazz pianist who earned many honours during his decades-long career, died Sunday December 23rd in Mississauga, Ontario aged 82.

The Montreal-born Peterson learned to play piano in childhood and by the 1940s was actively performing in Canadian big bands such as the Johnny Holmes Orchestra. A groundbreaking performance at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1949 brought Peterson's career to an international level.

Among many honours, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour, in 1984. He also received seven Grammy Awards and in 1978 was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Melvin Douglas (Mel) Lastman (born March 9, 1933) was the mayor of the former city of North York, Ontario, Canada from 1972 until 1997. In 1997, North York, along with four other municipalities, amalgamated with the city of Toronto. Lastman ran for and won the mayoral race for the new city, beating incumbent Toronto mayor Barbara Hall. Re-elected in November 2000, he served his full final term. Lastman did not run in the subsequent 2003 municipal election.
