Radio Philippines Network, Inc. (RPN) is a Philippine VHF television network of the Government Communications Group and is shown on cable networks throughout the Philippines. RPN's studios are located at Broadcast City, Old Balara, Capitol Hills, Diliman, Quezon City and its transmitter at Panay Ave., Quezon City.

History

RPN was launched on June 29, 1960 as Kanlaon Broadcasting System (KBS). Kanlaon is a volcano on the Philippine island of Negros, the home of Benedicto. During the 1970s, the network enjoyed popularity when its shows John En Marsha, Flordeluna (which starred the then-rising star Janice de Belen), and Superstar (featuring "Superstar" Nora Aunor) were hits. The title of its nightly newscast, NewsWatch, became the generic name for any televised newscasts because it was the premiere newscast of its day (in a world without TV Patrol); and its panel of newscasters, led by Harry Gasser, Cathy Santillian and Frankie Abao, Jr. became household names.

During these glory years, RPN became one of the first Philippine television stations to broadcast anime, including Macross, Voltes V, Astroboy, and Starblazers (predating ABC-5 by a decade). It also aired classic series from the United States, like Hunter, Airwolf, and MacGyver; as well as classic game shows like The Price is Right.

After the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, the stock and assets of RPN, IBC and Banahaw Broadcasting Corporation's BBC-2 were sequestered by the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG). President Corazon Aquino awarded BBC, through an executive order, to ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation headed by Eugenio Lopez, Jr. RPN's and IBC's assets were turned over to the Government Communications Group.

It fell into a slump with the resurrection of ABS-CBN and the reformatting of its one-time rival GMA Network. However, the network gained popularity once again in 1996 when it aired the Mexican soap opera Marimar and started the telenovela craze in the country. Also, around this time, RPN introduced Dragonball Z to the Philippines.

There are plans to sell RPN and IBC to the private sector. Possible buyers include Solar Entertainment Corporation (RPN's current production partner) and the PLDT Group of Manny Pangilinan,[citation needed] who failed to purchase GMA Network earlier.

On March 11, 2007 RPN launched some new programs with its slogan Kasama Mo! (Tagalog for "Your Companion", and it is also the slogan for Radio Mindanao Network or RMN which is the largest consortium of AM and FM radio networks in the Philippines). Some of its local programs like Philippines' Next Top Model, KEMIS: Ke Misis Umaasa, Showbiz Ka!, Sabi ni Nanay, and Dalawang Tisoy are all produced by the Solar Entertainment Corporation. This joint co-production agreement with Solar makes RPN a de facto part of the Solar family, similar to the arrangement when the primetime block was still called Prime Shift. However, RPN and Solar remain separate entities.

On July 16, 2007 RPN was relaunched again with new programs both foreign and local shows with its newest slogan, Pare! ("Friend").

On December 24, 2007, Tonypet Albano (undersecretary and executive director of Malacañang's Office of Political Coalition Affairs and Deputy Spokesperson of TEAM Unity) was appointed chairman of Radio Philippines Network (RPN) 9 (replacing Education Undersecretary Mona Valisno, incumbent Presidential Assistant for Education). Undersecretary Robert Rivera was appointed director of the board, while RPN-9's president and chief executive officer is former senator Orlando Mercado.[1]

On January 1, 2008, SOLAR Entertainment's former cable-only channel C/S programs premiered on the station.

On May 27, 2008, PBA announced that RPN would air the PBA games starting 2008-09 season through Solar Sports after 30 years of hiatus. Aside from live games aired on RPN, Solar would provide additional coverage on its Basketball TV cable channel.[2]
