List of tallest buildings and structures in London

Canary Wharf is home to the three tallest buildings in London. From the left; the 200-metre HSBC Tower, the 235-metre One Canada Square and the 200-metre Citigroup Centre.

This list of the tallest buildings and structures in London ranks skyscrapers and towers in the city of London, United Kingdom by height. As of May 2007, there were 10 buildings with a roof height of at least 150 metres (490 ft) in London with a further 12 under construction or approved for construction.[1]

London has strict regulations on building height to preserve its protected views, especially those of St Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London and Westminster Palace.[2] Until the early 1960s, most buildings in London were restricted to 30 metres (98 ft) in height. This restriction was put in place in order to keep every floor of a building in reach of the fire-fighting equipment.[3] The lifting of the height restriction caused a boom in the construction of tall buildings during the 1960s. Most prominent of these was the Post Office Tower (now known as the BT Tower), built as a combined office and microwave-relay station.

One of London's first notable tall buildings was the 117 metres (380 ft) Centre Point, completed in 1966. The NatWest Tower followed in 1980, which at 183 metres (600 ft) became London's first genuine "skyscraper" by international standards. It was followed in 1990 by the 235 metres (770 ft) One Canada Square, which formed the centrepiece of the Canary Wharf development. Following another 10-year gap, several new skyscrapers appeared on London's skyline—8 Canada Square, 25 Canada Square, the Heron Quays buildings, the Barclays headquarters and the award-winning 30 St Mary Axe.

The next few years will see massive changes to London's skyline, with literally dozens of new skyscrapers planned.[4] Approximately 40 towers are propsed, approved or under construction in Canary Wharf alone. In 2007, construction began on the 225 metres (740 ft) Leadenhall Building,[5] and as of June 2008, the 310 metres (1,000 ft) Shard London Bridge site is under demolition, the 288 metres (940 ft) Bishopsgate Tower is under construction, as is the 246 metres (810 ft) Heron Tower and the 236 metres (770 ft) and 189 metres (620 ft) Riverside South towers. The 181 metres (590 ft) St George's Wharf Tower, the 163 metres (530 ft) Beetham Tower, and the 160 metres (520 ft) Fenchurch Street Tower, along with numerous other skyscrapers around the capital will also start construction in 2008.
