John Joseph "Jack" Hannahan IV (born March 4, 1980 in St. Paul, Minnesota) is an infielder currently with the Oakland Athletics. He is mainly a third baseman but has also played first base.

He attended The University of Minnesota for college and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 3rd Round of the 2001 MLB Draft. Following his junior season, Hannahan was named an All-American and Big Ten Conference Player of the Year.

Hannahan made his major league debut on May 26, 2006, playing first base. He would go 0-9 with the Tigers in 2006.

On August 13, 2007, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics for outfielder Jason Perry. He had been with the Toledo Mud Hens, the Tigers Triple-A team, for the whole season up until the trade. He hit .295 with 13 home runs and led the International League with a .422 on-base percentage at the time of the trade. The Athletics purchased his contract the next day.

On August 15, 2007, Hannahan got his first major league hit, which was a double, off Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox. It was the 14th at bat of his career. On August 20, 2007, against the Toronto Blue Jays, Hannahan hit his first career home run off Shaun Marcum.

Trivia

  • Hannahan and teammate Jack Cust's real first names are John yet both go by Jack. More coincidentally, both of their middle names are Joseph. Formally/Legally they are John Joseph Cust III and John Joseph Hannahan IV.
  • Jack was known in Detroit in 2006 as Jack Hann-a-who? due to absolutely nobody knowing who he was when he got called up. He was not a top prospect and when asked by the media why Hannahan was called up manager Jim Leyland simply stated "I heard he was a heck of a hitter"
  • Jack's older brother, Buzz, was the 1998 Division III Baseball Player of the Year at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. Buzz played several years in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.
