Innviertel

The Innviertel (literally German for the Inn quarter or district) is an Austrian region south-east of the Inn river, belonging to the state of Upper Austria and bordering the German state of Bavaria. The other three quarters of Upper Austria are Hausruckviertel, Mühlviertel, and Traunviertel.
History
Innviertel belonged to Bavaria until 1777. After the War of the Bavarian Succession it was ceded to Austria.In the Napoleonic Wars it returned to Bavaria in 1809 and was ceded to Austria in 1816 again. The long bavarian membership is shown in the regional dialect.
Region
The region is origin called Innbaiern It is 2250 km²large and there live about 200.000 People. The Innviertel spans the districts of Schärding, Ried im Innkreis and Braunau am Inn. Central town is Ried im Innkreis, the largest town is Braunau, with about 15.000 Inhabitans.
Major towns in the Innviertel include the district capitals Schärding, Ried im Innkreis and Braunau am Inn.
