The Futurama Portal

Futurama is an animated American cartoon series created by Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons) and David X. Cohen (a writer for The Simpsons). Set in "New New York" in the year 3000, it was introduced on the Fox Network, originally airing from March 28, 1999 to August 10, 2003. It is slated to return to the air with new episodes on Comedy Central in 2008, and is currently rerun on Comedy Central, on Teletoon in Canada, Channel Ten in Australia, and both Sky One and Channel 4 in the U.K.

The series begins with Philip J. Fry, a New York City slacker and pizza delivery boy, who is accidentally cryogenically frozen on New Year's Eve, 1999. He is unfrozen 1000 years later, on 2999-12-31, and finds himself in New New York. Fry's attempt to escape from his now-mandatory job assignment as a delivery boy ends when he is hired at Planet Express, a small intergalactic package delivery company ran by his distantly descended nephew, as a delivery boy. The series covers the adventures of Fry and his colleagues as they travel around the universe making deliveries on behalf of Planet Express.

"Space Pilot 3000" is the pilot episode of Futurama, which originally aired in North America on March 28, 1999. The episode focuses on how the series protagonist, Philip J. Fry, was frozen then awoke in the future and introduces some of the other series regulars. It sets the stage for many of the events to follow in the series including foreshadowing plot points that would not be revealed until later in the show’s run and introducing viewers to the futuristic setting inspired by a variety of classic science fiction series from The Jetsons to Star Trek. It was written by David X. Cohen and Matt Groening, and directed by Rich Moore and Gregg Vanzo. Dick Clark and Leonard Nimoy guest starred as themselves. In general the episode received good reviews, often contrasting it to Groening’s other series, The Simpsons.

Selected biography

Doctor John Zoidberg (born August 5) is the fictional staff doctor of the Planet Express delivery service in the animated television series Futurama. The character is voiced by Billy West. Zoidberg is a lobster-like alien from the planet Decapod 10. Though he claims to specialize in working on humans he usually proves to have very little knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Although he is a doctor he lives in extreme poverty and is often portrayed as being unpopular and generally disliked by the staff of Planet Express. In the episode "That's Lobstertainment!" Zoidberg is revealed to have aspirations of working as a comedian, however, he is no more successful in this pursuit than he is as a doctor.

Did you know...

There have been four production seasons of Futurama however due to the large lead time in creating episodes and the hectic nature of the broadcast schedule they were broadcast as five seasons.
The first of four straight-to-DVD Futurama movies, Futurama: Bender's Big Score, was released in the US on November 27, 2007.
