Famous trains
The ensuing list of Famous passenger trains primarily includes those train routes that have come to be considered "legendary" both in recent times and during their past history. Before the post-World War II period with the advent of more widely accessible and affordable air transport, rail travel was the predominant means of transportation for long-distance travel - and was therefore most common only for the wealthy or those with an urgent personal or business need. Since the late 20th century, the main purpose of the majority of these trains is tourism. Nonetheless, certain routes are still integral parts of the transport systems of some countries (e.g. Russia).
