Evangelion units or simply Evas, are the mechas piloted by the children chosen by NERV. Although at first glance they appear to be giant humanoid robots, they are actually cybernetic, integrating a substantial mechanical infrastructure with many biological components. Their flesh is rarely seen, however, since they are covered in flexible polymer sheeting, armor plating, and restraints. They are several stories in height, with fearsome, beast-like masks. Selected biography

Asuka Langley Soryu is designated as the Second Child ("Second Children" in the Japanese versions) of the Evangelion Project and pilots the Evangelion Unit 02. Her ethnic background is three-quarters German, one-quarter Japanese; although she is a native of Germany and was raised there, her nationality is American. Asuka's native language is German, and she often lapses into speaking German words or phrases when she is flustered, although she speaks fluent Japanese. She is a child prodigy and has a university degree as a teenager, though it is not specified what field her degree is in. She is characterized by her fiery red hair and equally fiery temper. Asuka is very proud of being an Eva pilot, and near-constantly wears her A10 nerve clips in her hair, because she wants everyone around her to know that she is a pilot. Asuka's iconic catch-phrase (always directed at Shinji) is "anta baka?!" ("What are you, an idiot?"), which the official English dub renders as "What are you, stupid?!"...(see more)

  • After the disaster of Second Impact in the year 2000, the global climate has been altered and Japan exists in a state of perpetual summer weather. A subtle hint of this in the series is that almost every time a scene is set outdoors, no matter the date, cicadas can be heard in the background: in Japan, cicadas only appear in the summer. Furthermore, Fuyutsuki clearly says in episode 21) "When this country still had seasons" about the time before the Second Impact.
